Handicraft workshops in the Lahemaa Heritage House

Spinning with a spindle

Spindles have been used to spin yarn since ancient times. In the workshop, we will learn the basics of spinning with a spindle. Each participant gets to take home a piece of self-made yarn, in which they have spun their own good thoughts and feelings.

Wool and spindles are provided by me.

Approximate duration 2 hours.

You can also buy a handcrafted spinning wheel and wool to take home.

Needlebinding

Before the use of knitting needles, nålebinding was the technique used for making mittens, socks, hats, cardigans and even ship sails. In the workshop, we will learn three different nålebinding techniques.

Needles and suitable yarn for practising are provided by me.

Approximate duration 3 hours.

You can buy additional yarn for practising.

Tablet weaving

The technique of tablet weaving can be used to make ribbons as well as broader belts. In the workshop, each participant makes a 1-cm-wide ribbon with a pattern they have themselves created and given meaning to.

Yarn and tablets for practising are provided by me.

Approximate duration 2 hours.

You can also buy handcrafted tablets.

Making dipped tallow candles

Before candles were cast in moulds, our ancestors made them from tallow, or sheep fat. A linen wick was repeatedly dipped in a layer of fat in hot water, until the candle was thick enough. The workshop can be carried out in cool, even cold weather, or in a cold room. Candle making is a long process that gives you plenty of time for contemplation and self-reflection.

Candle making material is provided by me.

Approximate duration 1 hour.

We make 1-2 candles.
